My adventure into the world of model trains began when my grandparents gave me my first HO scale layout on a simple 4x8 sheet. Even though we had to move and that layout had to be sold, the passion stuck with me.
As life kept moving, so did my layouts. For a brief time, I built a hand-crafted HO model railroad that actually wrapped around our dining room and front room. It stood about four feet tall on legs and filled the space with a little piece of the railroad world. Even though it was temporary, it was another step in my journey and a lot of fun to create. Every piece I added was a reminder that, no matter where we were living, there was always room for a bit of railroad magic.
And here’s the kicker: once I took a peek at the price tags on pre-made model buildings and rolling stock, I nearly needed a fainting couch. It was like watching my wallet do a disappearing act! That’s when the light bulb went off: if I could design these pieces myself, I could create them for a fraction of the cost and have the freedom to customize them exactly the way I wanted.
So, there I was, staring at a pile of model train parts and thinking, “If only these things would just design themselves!” Spoiler alert: they didn’t. That’s when I realized I had to roll up my sleeves and learn a bit of design magic myself.
Of course, it wasn’t all smooth tracks from there. My first real project was a waterwheel with a small building. And let me tell you, coordinating Fusion 360 and my FL Sun printer to actually get that design from digital dreams to physical reality took some real time— we’re talking over a year of trial and error, a few prototype misadventures, and maybe a couple of colorful words muttered under my breath. But eventually, after all that persistence, I finally had a waterwheel model that actually worked.

So off I went into the world of resin printing. I spent over a year experimenting with it and getting the hang of all the new quirks. It was definitely a learning curve, but I started to get the results I wanted. The catch? Well, let’s just say resin printing comes with its own set of challenges—like a safety gear fashion show. You need a respirator, gloves, goggles, and a lot of caution. In other words, it started to feel like I was suiting up for a spacewalk just to print a tiny train part. Eventually, I decided it wasn’t worth all the precautions for my model railroad projects.
And that brings us to the next chapter. Enter the FlashForge printer, which stepped into the scene like a hero at a holiday train show. Thanks to the whole “Trains at Christmas” event, I found a better solution that gave me the detail I needed without feeling like I was prepping for a science experiment.
Now let’s talk about what a game-changer that FlashForge was. Not only did it bring me the quality I was after, but it also did it at a pace that left my old setups in the dust. Faster prints, great detail, and way less hassle. It was like moving from a steam engine to a bullet train, and it made the whole process a lot more enjoyable and efficient.
